We Heart Earth (Single Stem Idea)

So for the month of April, Hornet (6yr old) and I were talking about creating only from recyclables in celebration of Earth Day. He did mention that Fancy Nancy’s teacher (from the Fancy Nancy books) said that every day is Earth Day so we should probably do that every day. I told him that I agreed and we should always keep in mind what we can reuse instead of buying new. As I type this he is busy creating a rocket ship out of a cardboard box for a surprise for his brothers when they wake up from naps! Anyhow, we made We Heart Earth’s from all things that could have been thrown away (except the paint)!

Enjoy this single stem idea of We Heart Earth for
Sprouts and Seedlings (toddler/preschool and elementary age)...

The Stuff
The FUN!
Cereal box
Red paint and brush
Old t-shirt (or coffee filter)
Green and Blue bingo dobbers (or washable markers or watercolors)
Spray bottle
Newspaper
Scissors
Glue

1. Cut a big end of the cereal box apart and paint the blank inside part. We used red. Let dry. You make have to push on it if it curls.

2. Cut an old white t-shirt into a circle. If you don’t have any old shirts you can use a piece of white fabric, coffee filter or paper towel.

3. Color the white circle green and blue to resemble earth. We used bingo dobbers and then sprayed them so the colors blended. Let dry.

4. Fold a newspaper in half and trace a hand along the fold so that the thumb and pointer finger are touching the fold to make half a heart. Make sure the writing on the newspaper is not upside down when you look through the half a heart. Cut out along the tracing.

5. Once everything is dry, glue earth to the painted cereal box and then the newspaper heart hands on top.

You can also write a cute saying such as “Take care of earth and she will take care of you” or “Love Earth” or "These hands will change the world".

Display as a good reminder for all of us!

  8. For a more lively result, I suggest using old magazines for the hands instead of newspaper. This craft will teach kids two things; how to take care of the earth and how to be creative.
