Happy Letter H (Alphabet Wall)

With Valentine’s last week it only seemed appropriate that we do the letter H (for heart). Maybe you can grab some hearts on clearance and join in on the H-fun! We had a great time singing “h” songs, cutting and painting hearts, going on a hippo and heart hunt and eating some hot dogs!

For the rest of the Alphabet,

Happy H
for (Seedlings ~ preschool age)...

What we did for the Happy Letter H?...

Alphabet Wall:
Made a Heart H ~ I taught the boys how to fold a paper in half and cut half a heart and then unfold – we would make a big deal every time we unfolded it to see how the heart turned out. We also glued down conversation hearts and the boys ate quite a few as well.

Books:
*Read Hide-and-Seek Hippo  (Alpha Tales book) and The GH Book (Bob Book Pre-Reader)

*Read many hippo books (there is just something about hippos that makes for a silly book!) ~ The Hiccupotamus by Aaron Zenz, Hippos Go Berserk! by Sandra Boynton, The Happy Hippopotami by Bill Martin Jr. and The Hippo-not-amus by Tony Payne

Art/Crafts:

*Heart Sponge Painting  ~ I cut some different size sponges into hearts and the boys dipped them in paint to make a picture. I made one too!

*Handprint Heart  ~ Make a cute Handprint Heart from Mommy Minutes! You have to check out her Handprint Alpabet - adorable!

*Happy Hippos  ~ This craft is so cute! Check out the instructions at Tippytoe Crafts.

Activities:
*Played Hippo and Heart Hunt  ~ We love hunts and have many hippos because that was Roly Poly’s fave animal for a while so everyone got him hippos. You could use anything that starts with an H or cut up some H,h's to hide! Just hide them around and the kiddo(s) can go for a hunt.

*Secret Message Hearts  ~ This is really fun to do! Just cut out a heart on white paper and write a message on it with white crayon. Then give your kiddo some watercolors (or watered down paint) and let them paint the heart to reveal the message!
My 6 year old (Hornet) had a great time making up a ton of these for his brothers!

Letter Formation:
*Made a body H ~ fun to do standing or laying down

*Practiced writing H, h ~ we used white boards

Music and Movement:
*Sang the “Letter H Song” ~ Lyrics from DLTK

Snack:
*Ate hotdogs ~ the boys wish everyday was hotdog day

More ideas…
*Have a Hat parade
*Play hopscotch!
....what else?

Please BRAINSTORM your ideas/suggestions in the COMMENTS below for the Happy H!
Happy Teaching!
