Yummy Letter Y (Alphabet Wall)

As we are nearing the end of the alphabet the boys are really into the sounds and finding all of the letters. Roly Poly is letter obsessed and is constantly making letter sounds, singing letter songs that we have done or telling me what words start with what letter. Firefly likes to point out letters when we are reading books or when he sees them on signs. It is so fun!

We did some fun things with the letter Y! The boys played with yarn by creating yarn pictures on sand paper, sewed paper trees with yarn and put some yarn on their alphabet wall Y. We also had some fun with the color yellow, did some yoga (which was quite entertaining) and did a yeast rising experiment!

What we did for the Yummy Letter Y?...
Alphabet Wall:
*Yarn ~
The boys cut up some pieces of yarn and glued them down on the Y.
Books:
*Read The Yak Who Yelled Yuck (Alpha Tales book) and The XYZ Book (Bob Book Pre-Reader)

*Read some fun Yarn book
~ Shall I Knit You a Hat? by Kate Kline, One Little Lamb by Elaine Greenstein, Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Mr. Putter & Tabby Spin the Yarn by Cynthia Rylant

*Read a Yellow book
~ The Yellow Balloon  by Charlotte Dematons - there are a couple other yellow balloon books. We liked this one because of the places around the world the yellow balloon travels.

Art/Crafts:
*Yarn Sewing~ We took some of our free art work (marble prints, sponge printing and ice painting) and we cut them into triangles. On the back I marked where they should put holes with the hole punch. The boys then punched holes somewhat close to the marks. I then taped a piece of yarn to the back and attached one of my plastic needles (you can also just put a little tape on the end to serve as a needle). Then I told them to sew the yarn back and forth through the holes. When they had went through all of the holes once or twice I taped the end of the yarn to the back. We then glued the trees on blank cards and also glued a star on. These made super cute Christmas cards. You can also do other shapes for thank you notes, Valentine’s cards or any other fun kid-made card!

*Yarn Creations ~ I gave the boys each a piece of sandpaper and a pile of yarn. I also gave them small sewing scissors because Roly Poly wanted to cut some of the yarn for his picture. They then used the yarn to make a yarn creation!

Activities:
*Yellow Discovery Bottles We added a little bit of water and some vegetable oil. Then Firefly got busy finding all items that are yellow. He put in pompoms, ribbon, eyeballs, yarn, beads, buttons sequins and pipe cleaners.  Like our other discovery bottles, we predicted which items would float or sink before we put them in.

*Yeast Rising Experiment ~ We used some small baby bottles a friend gave me but any bottle or small mouthed jar will work. Just add some sugar, yeast and warm water. I didn’t measure the sugar and yeast – about a half of a spoon of each. Then we put the lids back on and shook it up. We then took the cap off and put a balloon (yellow of course) on top and waited for the yeast to start “eating” the sugar. This doesn’t happen near as fast as vinegar and baking soda but it is still pretty cool. Firefly had a hole in his balloon so it started bubbling out the hole – I thought he would be grouchy but he proved me wrong and thought it was cool.

*Yellow Balloon Hunt ~
After reading the Yellow Balloon I ran to find a yellow balloon and hid it in the basement. I then told the boys to come and find it. My boys love playing hide and seek so of course they loved this as well. We kept playing by taking turns who got to hide it. This game lasted for quite a while until Firefly pitched a fit because he had a couple times of not finding it. We will have to play again soon.

Letter Formation:
*Y on sand paper

*Y with body

Music and Movement:
*Yoga~ I put on a yoga video and we had a great time doing the poses! Roly Poly is wearing a rubber band around his head as a sweatband (I promise I don't wear a sweatband while working out - not sure where he got this idea)! You can see Firefly in the background - he was not impressed. :)

Snack:
*Yellow Breakfast  and Y Breadsticks~ We had yellow French toast, yellow bananas and yellow pears. We also had Y bread sticks for dinner!

Yams
